A Face Mask Does not help Against the Coronavirus – can Have Opposite Effect

Climate and environment blog

In conjunction with the Coronavirus, more and more people have started using face masks in the hope of protecting themselves against the infection. However, this is a misnomer, and on the contrary, may increase the risk of becoming ill.

The coronavirus has spread to at least 44 countries and infected tons of people. And the number is constantly growing.

However, it turns out that protection can have the opposite effect – you both increase the risk of getting sick yourself and risk spreading diseases further.

Mouthguards are designed to prevent bacteria from spreading to their surroundings, not the other way around.
“The mouthguard does not protect you who are healthy from infection. However, anyone who is sick can, to a certain extent, protect the environment from liquid particles during, for example, coughing and sneezing.”

One reason for the misunderstanding may be that healthcare professionals carry similar equipment when dealing with infectious diseases.

However, this is respiratory protection that usually has built-in filters, which filters out infectious substances, writes the Public Health Agency.

INCREASED RISK OF GETTING SICK

Using a face mask can even increase the risk of being infected with viruses. This is because there is a risk that viruses will accumulate in the protection. There is also a risk of accidentally spreading the virus yourself when removing and removing the mask.
