How does bioenergy work?

Biofuel is processed into energy. A cogeneration plant provides both electricity and heat and can be run with almost any fuel.

Residual products from the forest are converted into electricity and heat in our CHP plant and into heat in our other plants. We use branches and peaks that are left over during logging, residues from the wood industry, root wood, demolition timber, and peat. This is energy that would otherwise have been wasted.

The renewable fuel gives low emissions of greenhouse gases and a large part comes from energy that is not otherwise used. Regardless of the fuel used, the energy content is better utilized than in traditional power plants.

The excess energy becomes heat

In a cogeneration plant, electricity is produced, and the heat generated is transferred to the district heating system. The CHP plant is reminiscent of a huge pressure cooker. The steam from boiling water drives turbines, which in turn drive generators that generate electricity that is transported on the electricity grid.

Instead of just cooling off the remaining heat, it is transferred to the district heating system. The system of underground hot water pipes that heat the houses in the city and the hot water in the taps. In this way, the spent fuel is utilized to the maximum, the energy is used very resource efficiently.
